Marcia Weekes, a native of Jamaica is the founder and Artistic Director of PraiseAcademy Barbados, now, in its 15th year. She is married to Barbadian Dave Weekes and together they have three boys Dan-Jamal, Marc-Ari and Josh-Dayo.
Marcia was ordained a Minister of the Gospel at Harlem Tabernacle in Harlem, New York in 1999. She had been a member of the Harlem Tabernacle Dancers. In her tenure at Harlem Tab, she had pioneered the formation of several dance ministries in New York and in Jamaica, her native land and also spearheaded several dance conferences back home in the Caribbean.
Marcia is a pioneer, who has been instrumental in progressing Praise Academy from a uni-focused dance school into a school of the arts where many forms of dance are taught in addition to acting for film and theatre. Their annual production “Glorious” is testament of Praise’ delve into the full scope of the Arts. Under Marcia’s tutelage, the school has excelled in NIFCA and Dancefest and has been sought out for Governmental, Corporate and Church functions. Marcia has guided and facilitated several dancers who have passed through Praise Academy to further their careers in dance at International Dance Schools.
She is an avid proponent of education and believes all artist must be well rounded and balanced. In this regard, she introduced the CXC Dance and Theatre Arts program at Praise as well as the internationally accredited ISTD exams, where students are able to exit Praise Academy with credentials which can further their chosen career.
Marcia’s love for God and His relevance in today’s times is borne out in the poignant, relevant and inspirational messages captured in every dance and drama she produces. This belief in God is also seen in the films she has produced, HUSH I, II and III, Chrissy and Vigilante – The Crossing and Barrow – Freedom Fighter. She believes she exist to be salt and light in any environment in which she is placed.
